Flouride

There are many people who add flouride to their drinking water. Some people do it because it strengthens their enamel, which protects your teeth from bacteria.  It is said to help prevent cavaties and  decrease tooth decay. Fluoride is usually in tap water, but not in bottled unless it was specifically added. There are many people who disagree with putting it in thier drinking water.

Many people oppose putting fluoride in our drinking water because of many reasons. It is said to decrease the thyroid’s functioning and lead to more bone fractures. Many studies have found that fluoride has increased the risk of hip fracture as people get older. It is shown to increase your risk of cancer in your liver and in oral cancer. Many studies have shown it to be toxic. Fluoride is more poisonous than lead and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic. It has been used as a pesticide. A 10-month-old infant could be killed by 1/100 of an ounce and a 100-year-old adult could be killed by 1/10 of an ounce of fluoride. It causes cancer, does not reduce tooth decay , increases fractures and causes premature aging. Also, it causes arteries to harden and people to have less of an appetite. Fluoride causes collagen breakdown, DNA damage and damage to the immune system. It increases chronic diseases and destroys white blood cells.

I think we should not have fluoride in our drinking water because it is not an essential nutrient and our body can be perfectly healthy without it. Fluoride is said to barely help your teeth from decay as well. A survey said that there was little difference in kids’ teeth that had been using fluoride and kids who had not. Places where fluoride has stopped being used, tooth decay rates have not increased. It is also said to cause dental fluorosis where you have mottled and discolored enamel. Dental fluorosis means there was an overdose on fluoride. Fluoride is somewhat considered to be poison. Half of the fluoride we take into our bodies each day is pushed out of the kidneys. Fluoride causes chromosome damage and interferes with DNA repair. Also, Rats have tested using it and it has shown brain damage and change in mental behavior. These and the reasons people oppose it in drinking water is why I don’t think it is necessary to have it in our water.

The side effects that concern me the most are the ones dealing with more bone fractures and hip problems. I think this is important because many older people have hip problems that can be very severe. I also think the possibility of dental flourosis is very important because we are trying to prevent tooth decay and trying to keep ourselves healthy. The decrease of thyroid function and increased risk of cancer are very important now also.
Many technological advances have been made throughout time to help us find ways to add fluoride to toothpaste and mouthwash. To put fluoride in toothpastes you do so by marrying the fluoride with an abrasive. Procter & Gamble found a fluoride-abrasive combination, that put stannous fluoride with calcium pyrophosphate. In 1955 Crest was created which lead to many more toothpastes with fluoride. Ozark discovered another combination in 1949 and in the1960s was selling it to toothpaste makers around the world. MFP soon found Colgate-Palmolive, which created some competition. In 1982, sodium fluoride was found by P&G with Advanced Formula Crest. There was a discovery of a hydrated silica abrasive and then gel toothpastes were later created. Sodium fluoride is currently the most used.
